A Pregnancy Post

I don't plan on too many uterus-focused blog posts.

But our email inbox seems to suggest that curiosity abounds regarding the upcoming addition, so we'll satiate you with a few more details.

This is the squish.
We're in the second trimester and have an October 27th due date.

That puts the "at full term" date five days after Biggie's birthday and five days before Pudge's.  Nice even split, if we do say so ourselves.

How am I feeling?
Pretty darn tired.  And Justin would say moody if he was out of reach of my fists.  I'm also feeling carsick about 23 1/2 hours of the day, but I have a couple prescriptions helping out with that.

Gender Preferences/Hopes?
Our biggest hope is for a healthy, perfectly-put-together baby.  We feel like gluttons praying for it, since we already have two that fit that description right now, but we're shooting the moon and hoping for a third.  As for genitals, I haven't a preference but with the track record on Justin's side, we're banking on blue and feel pretty confident Pudge will maintain her post as resident Princess.

Weight gain?
Ummm.  None of your business.  Same answer for those photographs-from-the-side expecting moms  take of themselves.  You know who does that?  People who look cute when they're pregnant.  I am NOT one of those.  I wasn't showing you close ups of my stomach beforehand, I am certainly not going to begin now.  Just picture an unusually haggard-looking woman slowly descending into obesity who is wearing ill-fitting pants and decidedly NOT glowing.  That will be accurate image enough.

Cravings?
Sleep is my #1 craving right now.  I haven't actually experienced "hunger" in about 9 weeks but I am going through pears, sauerkraut, watermelon, and tangerine grapefruit juice at an alarming rate.  Oh, and I will confess to eating more Whatchamacallit candy bars in the last week than I have in the last year.

Pregnancy Quirks?
My sister and I have goofy blood that doesn't carry folic acid and likes to clot way more than it should.
It means pregnancies come with supplements and anticoagulants and lots of blood monitoring.  I did abdominal injections with my last pregnancy but my perinatologist okayed starting this one out with an aspirin regimen and working up to injected anticoagulants as I need to, based on blood work.  It will be a trick to make it  full term without complications, but I feel like we're informed on what the situation is and have lots of big-brained people advising us along the way.

Poor Pudge and Biggs.
Pudge is the most excited sibling regarding the upcoming baby.  (To be honest, this is because there's been some miscommunication and she's under the impression we will be kidnapping her buddy Eli's new baby brother at some point in the future).  I do hope the enthusiasm continues, since Pudge is going to feel her little buns pushed toward Big Girldom a bit faster than they otherwise may have been.  The thought of three cribs and three in diapers gives our home an "overcrowded foreign orphanage" feel I'd rather not embrace, so she's got a productive summer ahead.  Her communication skills are blossoming lately and she's gaining confidence in taking the initiative to communicate her needs (via signing) so I know she'll rise to the challenge.

There is, without question, a dark day looming for "baby" Biggs, but ultimately we're doing the kid a huge favor.  People don't anticipate Biggie's highly dramatic, tantrum-throwing behavior thanks to Down syndrome stereotyping and his sister's perpetual sunshine.  So, we're making him a middle kid in the hopes that birth order can be blamed for what has eluded explanation up until now.

Thanks so much for the many congratulations and the enthusiasm you've shown for our newest recruit.  I am learning there's a natural order to things and there may be a reason a sane person doesn't experience their first pregnancy with two toddlers in the house while attending grad school, but so far we're surviving.  We'll keep you posted on our progress and look forward to celebrating with you in the fall!

  1. I'm glad things are progressing well. Your description of yourself sounds like someone featured on people of walmart.com. :)

  3. Mwah! I wish you sleep, elevated feet, quiet and obedient squibs, a doting husband, boring uncomplicated doctor visits, and oh yes, sleep. Thanks for sharing the details for all of us groupies. The squish is already well loved. xoxo

  4. Pregnant with one toddler was bad enough! You sure are brave to do it with two, and while in school. :)

I'm sure you are an adorable preggo lady!

  5. Congratulations! I didn't know you were pregnant. That's so great. I hope everything goes well, and you can carry full-term. I must admit I'm a little confused, because you said you had a previous pregnancy, and then the end that this was your first. I think I missed something, but anyway, Congrats again. Just keep reminding yourself of the beautiful, perfect baby you will hold in your arms in just a few months : )

    1. That is a little confusing. I miscarried last summer. Since that one was completely (and blissfully) asymptomatic, I suppose this one is the first pregnancy I'm experiencing the 'wonders' of. :)

  7. do you have MTHFR? Your pregnancy sounds a lot like mine with asprin and blood check. I too lack folic acid in my blood.
Congrats to you and your family. I love reading your blog.

    1. Yup. Our thrombophilia is a combination of MTHFR and a protein S deficiency (which causes the clotting issues). My sister's struggled MUCH more with clotting issues outside of pregnancy and she's a champ. My issues have only occurred during pregnancy, so I've been much luckier that way.

    2. I have the MTHFR gene mutation as well! It's so rare to find other women who know what the heck that is! Mine wasn't found until after our daughter was born. I only have clotting issues while pregnant as well. I take a prenatal vitamin, folic acid supplement and baby aspirin daily (since we are TTC).

Sending prayers for a wonderful (and uneventful) pregnancy! Congrats!

  11. Super excited for you although we think you should push this one off into November so you can have 4 months of straight birthday parties at your house (and we don't want him/her coming early!!!) Oh and of course we wouldn't want to miss you waddle around the Step UP! LOL
Praying the sick feelings subside immediately!
Oh and for the CUTE pregnant lady, girl you are one of the cutest! (Justin take at least a few belly pics of her so #3 can see them later! Aidan and Alayna still giggle every time they see those pics.
We can't wait to meet our newest little buddy!

  12. Holy Cankles, Batman!! I didn't realize you were expecting -- Congratulations!! Many wishes for a medically uncomplicated pregnancy (I'm banking on the squibs & school & potty training that will keep this phase of your life complicated enough...), all the crazy food that your mind can convince you that you are craving, and plenty of sleep. Sooo excited for your family! And even if you don't publish the pictures, take a few of the growing bump - you'll be amazed at how awesome your body really is with this little miracle. :)

  13. I love the details on the squish and even if it is another girl, I am sure Pudge will promote herself to queen immediately. I'm sure she would wear that crown so well! Good luck this summer with the potty training...I'm still living in potty training hell almost a year after we started down this road. I bet Pudge will show up Sweet Pea though! Give Biggs a big hug from all of us...don't want him to feel excluded.

Congrats again and I hope this pregnancy gets easier on you! You are a brave soul to tackle (sometimes literally) two squibs, grad school and an uncooperative squish. Have a talk with squish and let him/her know that you need your sleep or you will have to allow the squibs to babysit her when she arrives. That might make squish behave! ;-)

  14. I am so very excited about the new addition, I can't wait to see all the trouble the three of them get into together ;-) I hope you start feeling better...a little less nausea would make things so much easier I am sure :-)

  15. Breeanna had to "grow up" a tad bit sooner than she should have as well. Her and Harleigh are 13 months apart ... and then shortly later ... along came Eythen. So ... in case you are trying to do the math ... Breeanna just turned 3 and Harleigh was almost 2 when Eythen was born. I was extremely sleep deprived ... and do not remember much of that time of our lives. BUT ... it was so worth it ... and I would do it again and again if God gave me the opportunity to do so.

May God bless you with a beautiful little baby and a healthy delivery. Jill Moore

  16. Congratulations on your newest addition. For what it's worth, I was sick, very sick even with Zofran but I was able to stop taking it at 13 weeks and by 15 weeks was feeling pretty much normal. Now at 21 weeks there is no sign of the car sick feeling which is wonderful. (Oh and I was able to remove myself from my bed for more normal adult hours too. :-)

  17. WHOAH!! I"m pregnant too! Due on 10-31, which is why we've nicknamed the baby "Boo!". Only one though - the biggest reason is that Boo! really knocked us over in all of his unplanned glory.

    Yay - preggo-buds rock.

I am also crazy-tired and feel carsick pretty much all of the time. At least I have raised the $2,400 I needed to raise for the Leukemia and Lymphoma society and the run will be over on May 6, so then I can just lie down and sleep for...well, as long as Moxie and Micah will let me. Ha. Ha. Ha.

    xoxo Be well, Mama

So happy for all of you!!! I'm sure there will be an adjustment period but I'm also sure the Squibs will fully integrate Squish into the fold. By the way, not that you asked or anything ;) , I also have MTHFR. It was discovered after I had two miscarriages and pushed for any and all info as I already had a healthy pregnancy 4 yrs prior. On a very funny note, Oone time when I had filled out some medical info on myself, my info where I shared that I had this MTHFR.... Well the lettering was mistaken for some.... Let's just say .... Some very, very bad language! Yeah not exactly how that was "miss interpreted" but , well yeah... Hope you are feeling better soon and have no complications at all.
    Hugs from Kim & Miss Thea-Ann :)
